Book review of The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber

5/12/2022

"The E-Myth Revisited" by Michael E. Gerber is one of the best business books for  small business owners for emphasizing the importance of systematizing and organizing your business so it will work without you. In other words - you get to own a business rather than a job!

Here are my top 10 lessons from the book:
  1. Don't confuse being good at a skill with being good at running a business. Being a good builder does not necessarily equal a good business owner! Learn or outsource asap!
  2. It's important to develop a clear vision for your business, including specific goals and objectives. If you don't know where you are headed, don't be surprised if you don't like where you end up!
  3. The business owner must wear multiple hats, including that of an entrepreneur, a manager, and a technician. Building a business requires a systematic approach that focuses on working "on" the business, not just "in" the business. When most new business owners are spending 95% of their time doing the 'technician' part of their role, who is managing the business and who is developing the business?
  4. Focus on creating a franchise prototype, which is a model of the business that can be replicated and scaled - regardless of whether you want to franchise or not. Creating systems is key to ensuring consistency and efficiency. The golden rule is that systems run your business and people run your systems.
  5. It's essential to hire the right team and train them  to ensure that they can operate within the systems you create.  Don't rely on just a few key employees, but instead create a system that allows for anyone to fill in and do a job.
  6. Clarity of roles: Create job descriptions and procedures manuals to ensure consistency and clarity. Everyone should know exactly what is expected of them (and the consequences if they don't deliver!?
  7. Embrace change and continually adapt to market conditions and customer needs. Always be seeking to improve your operations and stay ahead of the competition. Innovate, innovate, innovate!
  8. Know who you are and who you serve. It's important to have a clear understanding of your target market and create marketing strategies that speak directly to them. Create a strong brand identity - this is crucial for building customer loyalty and trust in your business.
  9. Maintain a balance between work and personal life. I am a great believer in healthy mind, healthy body, healthy soul = healthy business. It ALL needs to be in alignment.
  10. Finally, take the time to work on personal development, including improving communication skills and leadership abilities. And work with a coach like me to do all of the above! ;-)

By following these principles, small business owners can achieve success and create a business that can thrive and grow over time.
