Discovering the Unexpected: What You Really Want vs. What You Think You Want!

28/8/2023

Often what you think you want is not what you want at all!

I'm lucky enough to have a really special team of leadership and management trainers who get to work with some pretty amazing organisations, businesses and NGOs.

Most clients are sure they know what they need from us when we first meet. They come to us to fix a particular problem with their team, business or organisation.
They often want a quick fix. They just see a problem that needs fixing. But often the problem they think needs fixing is just a symptom of a very different issue altogether.

For example...

Let's talk about DISC - a brilliant tool for teams

DISC is a fab tool for teams that can help them work together better and avoid unnecessary drama.

Here are 7 reasons why you & your team should learn about DISC profiling:

1. Say goodbye to awkward misunderstandings: By understanding each other's communication styles, you can avoid a lot of miscommunication. No more wondering if your co-worker meant to sound rude or if they're just having a bad day! 😀

2. Better team work: With DISC profiling, you can identify each other's strengths and weaknesses and use that knowledge to work together more effectively.

3. Be a better leader: When you understand your team members' personalities, you can lead them more effectively. Think of yourself as a wizard who can cast spells to motivate your team and make better decisions. 😀 ...

If so, your emotional intelligence skills may need a polish!

EI is something I talk about A LOT with my leadership and management clients. I think it more important than any other skill. And like any other skill, it can be developed with practice.

My non-negotiable, absolutely-must-do tip for anyone who wants to develop their emotional intelligence skills is to learn DISC profiling until you know it inside out and back to front...

How good are you at praising your team?

28/11/2022

Interestingly, a LOT of managers and leaders really struggle to praise their team.

This can often depend on their DISC profile (if you are not sure what this is and manage a team - we REALLY need to talk 😊).

D profiles will struggle to praise unless you go way above and beyond their expectations.

I profiles will be over the top and possibly even praise you for arriving to work every day. 😉

S profiles will take giving praise seriously and will probably be pretty good at it.

C profiles probably won’t think to unless your work is perfectly perfect. It’s your job after all.

How good are you at praising?

Let’s talk about rapport building.

For the I’s and S’s on DISC profiling, rapport building is essential. They want to be your friend, they want to feel like and accepted so even if being talkative, warm and friendly is not your thing (that’s you… D’s and C’s!), it’s crucial to give them what they need.

Here are the top 10 barriers to rapport building...

I love DISC workshops! There is nothing quite like watching the lightbulb go on when people 'get it'.

They start to understand themselves better and more importantly, they understand how to get the best out of others. It’s great for improving relationships & communication within teams...

Tip 110) Getting the best out of Conscientious  Cautious thinkers (DISC part 5)

Last, but by no means least, is the C profile. Think accountant, engineer, inventor, and anything else that needs a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

How to spot them...
C profiles are usually very reserved and prefer their own company to crowds. Often classed as the least emotional of profiles, C's do not tend to talk much about their personal lives or to be bothered much about yours, so personal chit chat is discouraged. C's love research, detail and data, and ask lots of questions.

What Do They Do Best?
  • Plan thoroughly before deciding to act.

Tip 108) Building RAPPORT with Steady profiles (DISC part 4)

Steady profiles are the most common profile in the UK, with an estimated 69% of the population being S profiles.

How to spot them:
High S profiles tend to be quiet and reserved at first, but once they get to know you, they make wonderful loyal friends. Often doing too much for others, S profiles could be described as the caring profile, and are often found in holistic therapies, life coaching, working with children or animals, nursing or admin support roles. Their most significant values tend to be security and stability.

What Do They Do Best?
  • Bring harmony to group situations.

Tip 106) CommUnicating with Influencers (DISC PART 3)

As promised, here is how to get the best out of Influencer profiles.

How to spot them:
They are the loudest, chattiest and most open of all the profiles. Happy to tell you all sorts of personal information, high I profiles are not only easily distracted, but they can also often be pretty distracting themselves. The life and soul of the party, this profile loves people, praise, having fun and interacting with others. Typically not great at time management and they can be pretty unorganised!

What they do best:
  • Inspire others to take action.
  • Think fast on their feet – optimistic, intuitive, creative.

Tip 104) Getting the best out of DOMINANT Drivers (DISC part 2)

Following on from Tip 102, here is how to get the best out of a D profile.

How to spot them:
D profiles are usually smartly dressed, outgoing and confident, often with a fairly large ego. To the point and blunt, they are very forceful with their opinions and like to base their decisions on facts, not emotions. For D's, it's all about the results, so they tend to be very ambitious.

What they do best:
  • Being decisive and taking risks.
  • Being direct, dynamic, disciplined.
  • Taking charge – they get things done.
  • Outgoing and confident.
