Tip 23) Why most small business owners hate selling...

For many small business owners and entrepreneurs, the word 'sales' is near the top of the 'Things I Hate Most' list, along with:
  • Wisdom tooth extraction,
  • Root canal work,
  • Delayed flights
  • Cheap iPhone chargers that never work for more than two weeks! 

If I had £100 for every time I've heard a business owner say ‘I don't like selling’, or ‘I'm not a salesperson’, I'd be a far richer woman that I am right now! 
So why is that? Usually because of one, or all, of the following:
  • Lack of confidence: In ourselves, in the sales process itself, and/or in our product or service.
  • Not wanting to appear pushy: When I ask people what the first things that come to mind are when I say the word 'salesperson', most will answer with words like slimy, manipulative, annoying and sleazy. So who wants to be labelled any of those words?!
  • Fear of rejection: This is another biggy. Most of us have a powerful desire to be liked and accepted. When we are selling, there is a pretty major chance that prospects will say no. Our brain translates this into 'they said no, therefore they don't like me'.
