As Twitter is currently the 3rd most popular social media site (after Facebook and Instagram), with over 326 million active users and 500 million Tweets per day, it may be worth exploring whether Twitter can help your business.

Here are 29 top tips on how to get the best out of Twitter:
  • Fill in your Twitter profile properly. Put some effort into it! Include a link to your business website or FB page. Have a good quality icon.
  • Have a great header image and change it regularly with different promotions, product news and events.
  • Promote your username everywhere. Add a follow button to your website. Include it on your business stationery. Promote it on other social media channels.
  • Make sure your Pinned Tweet is your best one. Latest news, offers, case studies, etc.
  • Know the best time to tweet. When are your followers and prospects most likely to be online?
  • Make life easier by scheduling some of your tweets with an app like Buffer or Tweetdeck.
  • Keep it under 100 characters when possible, as studies show these are the highest performing tweets.
  • Make use of the full 280 character limit only when you have to.
  • Allow at least 20–40 characters for people to retweet your posts.
  • Make use of hashtags to get your tweets out to a wider audience.
  • Don't just spam your business, products or services.
  • Share interesting content from others, as well as your own.
  • Aim for engagement. Run polls. Ask a question. Your thoughts? Do you agree? What do you think? 78% of people who follow SMBs retweet content from that business.
  • Use a 'call to action'—TRY this, CALL now, VISIT us. In a Twitter survey, 69% of respondents purchased from an SMB after following them on Twitter.
  • Use GIFs, images and videos. Studies show we remember 65% of visual posts, compared to 10% for text-only posts. 82% of Twitter users watch video content on Twitter. Your own videos can drive 2.5 times more replies than retweets or other peoples videos.
  • If relevant, tag influencers.
  • Don't use slang and jargon.
  • Show your personality. Be authentic in ALL of your marketing. 75% feel better about an SMB after following and reading its tweets.
  • Always reply to genuine messages—it's rude not to.
  • Always respond when people @mention you.
  • Retweet old (good) content.
  • Ask for Retweets.
  • Run promotions and offers.
  • Jump on trending topics relevant to your industry.
  • Work with other non-competing businesses to share each other's content.
  • Set up Google alerts for the latest news.
  • Create eye-catching graphics with simple programs like Canva.
  • Make use of Twitter lists to organise your feed. That way, you can check mini streams rather than looking at the latest tweets from everyone you are following. For example, you could have a Customer list, a Prospect List, an Influencer List.
  • Use keywords in Twitter search to find your target customers.
