Tip 336) Know where you want to be in one year

What will be different about your business in one year? What will be different about your health? Your relationships?

I'm sure we have all heard quotes like "you can't hit a target that you can't see", or "if you are not sure where you are going, don't be surprised if you don't like where you end up", yet most people are not clear on where they want to be in a year's time.

While it's good to have long-term goals, I think 12-month goals can be much more motivating. When a goal is five years away, it can be very easy to procrastinate! 12 months is long enough to make a real difference, but short enough to create some urgency.

Ask yourself the following questions ...
  • What will my turnover be?
  • What will my profit be?
  • How many hours will I be working?
  • How many team members will I have?
  • What additional services or products do I want to offer?
  • How do I want my clients to talk about me?
  • How do I want to feel about my business?
  • Where will my business be based?
  • What systems will I have in place?
  • What marketing will I be doing?
  • What do I need to learn?
       ... etc., etc.

Then make a one-page plan. Break each question down and think about the "how". How will you increase profit? How will you improve your margins? What needs to happens for you to introduce new products or services? Stick your plan somewhere where you can see it every day. Commit to doing at least one thing every day to move you forward.

What we focus on improves, so give your plan (and your business) the focus it deserves. Or don't be surprised if you are not overjoyed at where you are this time next year!

Keeping you motivated ... ;-)
