Tip 74) You DESERVE what you TOLERATE!

Tolerate = to put up with something unpleasant, something that annoys you, something that's not good for the team, or something that's not good for business.

Time to be honest with yourself...

What are you tolerating in your business?

Clients often complain about things not being right in their business or their team, but when I ask what they have tried to do about it, the answer is usually "very little".

This is especially true when talking about people in their team.
If I had £10 for every time I heard a client say something along the lines of...
  • She won't do as I ask
  • I've told him so many times
  • Whatever I do, nothing changes
  • I've tried but...
  • They don't take any notice
  • They say they will, but they don't
...then I'd be a very rich woman currently sipping lovely cocktails on a beach in the Caribbean right now!

Unfortunately, left to their own devices your team can pretty much set their own rules of the game. If you are not holding them accountable to their tasks and responsibility then, sorry to be brutal but, you deserve what you are getting.

The answer is to be prepared to hold your team accountable and for there to be consequences for not following instructions. Many people are too worried about being nice and being liked, so they don't speak their minds. It's your business, so it's up to you to have the difficult conversations.

Having regular 1-2-1 sessions can help you identify behaviour that needs to change. (More on how to run a simple 1-2-1 coming up in Tip 86…)

'Til next time...
