Tip 118) Polish your closing skills

Closing is often classed as a dirty word in small businesses with clients often saying things along the lines of...
  • But I don't want to be pushy
  • They'll buy it if they want to buy
  • I feel really awkward asking for their business
I've watched many sales trainees over the years build a brilliant rapport, do a great presentation, and then walk away from a deal or new client simply because they are too scared to ask for the sale – see Tip 86 on sales beliefs.
You have to ask the question
There are many blogs out there which will tell you all about the 50 different types of closes (which I think really overcomplicates things!). You just have to ask the question in a way that you are comfortable with. Decide what that is and practise saying it until you are comfortable with it. If you already have a strong positioning (tip 88), then they already know that you will be asking them to buy. 

My close is as simple as, "So what do you think, shall we do this?". It's simple and works a treat for me. By the time I've got to the point where I need to ask this question, I already know whether they are going to buy from me because I have been temperature checking all the way through (see tip 116).
